Levels
Who I teach
Key Stage 3
Years 7–9. The years where the foundations for GCSE are either laid properly or quietly skipped. Also where a bored, able student is most worth stretching.
GCSE & IGCSE
Foundation and Higher, all boards. Whether the goal is securing a grade 4, pushing from a 6 to an 8, or reaching a 9 with room to spare.
A level & Further Maths
Pure, Mechanics, Statistics and Further Maths. Including the step up from GCSE, which catches out more students than any other transition.
University admissions
TMUA, STEP and Oxbridge interview preparation. Covered separately →
Adults returning to maths
GCSE resits, Access courses, teacher training entry requirements, or simply rebuilding confidence in a subject that went badly the first time. No judgement, ever.
Business & professional maths
Quantitative skills for work: forecasting, pricing, probability and risk, regression, reading a model critically. Taught by someone who did this commercially for fourteen years.
Format
In person or online
In person. I teach face to face across Milton Keynes and the surrounding area — including Bletchley, Wolverton, Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford, Woburn Sands and the villages between. Sessions are normally at your home.
Online. Sessions run on video with a shared whiteboard we both write on. Everything we produce is saved and sent to you afterwards, along with a short set of varied problems. Students are often sceptical about online maths and then find they prefer it — there is no rewriting of a whiteboard that has already been wiped.
Frequency. Most students come weekly during term. Some book intensively before an exam. Some come fortnightly to stay ahead. There is no minimum commitment and no package to buy up front.
Hourly rates depend on level and whether the session is in person or online. I will quote you plainly on the introductory call — no packages, no tie-in, no charge for the first conversation.

The first paid session is diagnostic. We work through real problems and I find out where the actual gap is, which is very often two or three years further back than the topic causing trouble. You get a written summary of what I found and what I would do about it, whether or not you continue.

Group courses
The Mathematical Executive
An eight-week, sixteen-lesson course for ages 11–16 that teaches university-level mathematics — linear programming, the Poisson distribution, regression, expected value — through business simulations. Built for students who are ahead and want somewhere to put it.
Small groups
Two or three students at a similar level can work together at a reduced rate per student. This works well for friends preparing for the same exam, and the discussion between students is often worth more than the saving.

Practicalities
How much maths tuition does a student actually need?
Less than most people fear. A weekly hour, used properly and followed up between sessions, moves students a long way over a term. What does not work is booking a large block of hours immediately before an exam and hoping volume substitutes for understanding.
Do you set work between sessions?
Yes, and it is short by design — usually a handful of deliberately varied problems rather than a long exercise. Twenty focused minutes twice in a week beats two hours the night before we meet.
Are you DBS checked?
TO CONFIRM: DBS status and date Parents are welcome to remain in the room or nearby for in-person sessions, and online sessions can be recorded on request.
What if it is not working?
Tell me and we stop. There is no notice period and nothing to cancel. If I think the issue is something I am not the right person to solve — a specific learning need, or a subject adjacent to maths — I will say so and try to point you somewhere better.
Which exam boards do you cover?
All the main ones — AQA, Edexcel, OCR, OCR MEI, and the international variants. The mathematics is the same; the differences are in question style and formula-booklet conventions, which we cover close to the exam.
